Auto Accident
Fender Bender
Automobile accidents occur on a daily basis and can cause years worth of pain and tightness. Unfortunately many injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents go undiscovered until future symptoms arise. These symptoms can be months or years later.
Following the initial crash impact meny people will experience a wide array of symptoms including neck and back pain, ringing in the ears, sudden headache, weakness of the arms and/or legs, fractures, and possibly lacerations. These can occur with even minor damages to your vehicle.
REMEMBER YOUR INJURIES ARE NOT DETERMINED BY HOW MUCH OR LITTLE YOUR VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED.
Todays vehicles are designed to absorb much of the impact forces and dissipating these forces before they can be absorbed by occupants. These technologies include unibody construction, crumble zones, airbags, and pretensioner seat belts. These technological advances in automotive safety help save lives and reduce serious injuries such as fractured bones and lacerations but the soft tissue injuries still remain.
Upon impact various body parts are being rapidly accelerated and then in response your body tries to slow that acceleration by contracting opposing muscles. This natural response is essential to avoid serious injuries but also causes muscle and ligament tears, instability, and whiplash when involving the neck.
Following any motor vehicle crash:
If you feel any immediate pain you should go to the emergency room for an evaluation. At the emergency room they will determine if there are any life threatening injuries along with any broken bones. You will most likely be given some prescriptions for pain medication and anti-inflammatories. Even if you are given a clean bill of health that does not mean that you dont have soft tissue injuries. These may take a few days to weeks to emerge.
Follow-up evaluation should be made with your local Chiropractor to evaluate the structural and functional integrity of the spine and extrremities. This will be done using X-rays and certain orthopedic and neurological tests.
